Adriaen Backer, married to Elsje Colijn, was a member of the [[Waterlanders|Waterlander]] Mennonite congregation at [[Amsterdam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Amsterdam]]. He was a Dutch painter, a pupil of his uncle [[Backer, Jacob Adriaensz (1608-1651)|Jacob Adriaensz Backer]]<em>. </em>For a time he stayed in Rome (1666); upon his return he introduced the baroque style into Holland by imitating Italian masters. The Rijksmuseum at Amsterdam contained four of his paintings in the 1950s.
