Yogyakarta (Indonesia)
Yogyakarta, an Indonesian city of 398,000 in 1987, 6,000,000 in 2003, is the capital of a special region in south Central Java designated as a sultanate of Yogyakarta. This special city recalls the days in the precolonial era when Java was under the rule of a succession of independent kingdoms. As one of the two key centers of Javanese culture, Yogyakarta still exhibits much of the heritage of those ancient kingdoms. That cultural heritage contributes greatly to the creativity of the present-day cultural and artistic world of Yogyakarta, as does the memory of its role as capital of Indonesia during the revolution.
The ecumenical Duta Wacana Theological Seminary, also a university, is located in Yogyakarta. The seminary has enjoyed the strong involvement of both of the Mennonite conferences of Indonesia at the student, faculty and trustee level. A congregation of the Persatuan Gereja-Gereja Kristen Muria Indonesia (the Muria Christian Church of Indonesia) has also been established in Yogyakarta.
