<p><b>New page</b></p><div>Johann D. Wiebe, elected deacon of the [[Wiens family name|Chortitzer Mennonite Church]] on 15 December 1881, was the oldest of eight surviving children of [[Wiebe, Gerhard (1827-1900)|Bishop Gerhard Wiebe]] (1827-1900) and Elizabeth Dyck (1828-1876). Johann was born on 6 January 1853 in the village of Heuboden, [[Bergthal Mennonite Settlement (Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine)|Bergthal Colony]], South [[Russia|Russia]]. He was baptized on 5 June 1872 and later that same year married Barbara Peters (1853-1884), daughter of Cornelius Peters (1816-1887) and Katharina Stoesz (1830-1900). They emigrated to Canada in 1875 along with their parents and siblings. Johann and Barbara settled in the village of Chortitz on the [[East Reserve (Manitoba, Canada)|East Reserve]], Manitoba where their 6 children were born of which 2 died as infants. In 1884 Barbara herself died giving birth to their youngest daughter. The following year Johann married Maria Sawatsky (1866-?). Together they had 12 children of which five died as infants. Their son Peter S. Wiebe (1888-1970) became Bishop of the [[Chortitzer Mennonite Conference|Chortitzer Mennonite Church]] in 1932 where he served until retiring in 1968.<br />
