Johann Wiebe: minister and elder; born 17 April 1806 in Tiege, Gross Werder, Prussia, the son of Gerhard Wiebe (9 May 1781, Krebsfelde, Prussia - 13 January 1848) and Elisabeth (Kroeker) Wiebe (25 December 1783, Ellerwalde, Prussia - 2 August 1844). On 20 June 1823, Johann married Margarethe Hamm (9 June 1814, Robach, Gross Werder, Prussia - 23 October 1888), daughter of Johann and Margaretha (Janzen) Hamm. Johann and Margarethe had 13 children, of which 10 survived infancy. One of the sons was Johann Wiebe (1840-1918), elder of the Alexandertal Mennonite Church. Johann died on 28 August 1872 in Mariental, Alt Samara, Russia and was buried on 2 September.

Johann was elected to the ministry in the Fürstenwerder Mennonite Church on 3 October 1859. Less than a year later, on 22 June 1860, he was elected to the position of elder, and was installed on 19 August 1860.

In 1868 the Prussian government passed a universal conscription law which permitted those who refused to bear arms to serve as hospital orderlies, office workers, agricultural workers, craftsmen, or drivers. While most Mennonites in Prussia chose to accept this change, Wiebe could not. He resigned as elder on 3 October 1869, Thanksgiving Day.

Wiebe and his family immigrated to Russia in 1870, settling in Alt Samara (Alexandertal). He passed away at the age of 64 years.
