Wernersdorf (Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland)
Wernersdorf (also known as Pogorzała and Wernersdorff; now known as Pogorzała Wieś; coordinates: 53.974161, 18.931159 [53° 58′ 26″ N, 18° 55′ 52″ E]; population in 1905, 543; in 2012, 440), is located approximately 5 kilometres (3 miles) south of Miłoradz (Mielenz), 10 km. (6 mi.) south-west of Malbork (Marienburg), and 48 km. (30 mi.) south-east of the regional capital Gdańsk (Danzig).
Wernersdorf was granted privileges before 1330 by Werner von Orseln, Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights. Until 1772 the village was part of the Kingdom of Poland. The First Partition of Poland resulted in the creation of a new province in 1773, called West Prussia. Wernersdorf was situated in the district (Kreis) of Marienburg until the establishment of the Free City of Danzig in 1920. The village came under the control of Nazi Germany during World War II until February 1945, when it was occupied by Soviet forces and returned to Poland. In 2012 Wernersdorf (now Pogorzała Wieś) was a village in the administrative district of Gmina Miłoradz, within Malbork County, Pomeranian Voivodeship.
In 1772, eight out of 16 landowners belonged to the Mennonite church. In 1776, the village had 10 Mennonite families with 48 individuals, including the names Bickert, Claasin, Dick, Ens, Jantzen, Neufeldt, Van Riesen, and Wiens. In 1820, there were 344 residents, including 50 Mennonites, with a similar number recorded in 1936.
Mennonites who were residents of Wernersdorf were members of the Heubuden Mennonite Church.
