John Walters was a citizen of India who was born in 1884 in the home of a Methodist minister. He was baptized in the Methodist Church as a young man. He was educated in or near Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India. After high school he went to the Hardoi Bible Institute. After finishing there, he took normal teachers training. In 1904 he married Bundi Bai, an orphan girl from the Mukti Bai Mission.

He accepted a position in the Karbala Mission in Raipur. However he was not happy in Karbala so in 1930 when the Bible school in Janjgir opened he accepted a position in that school. There he taught church history, religions, Bible geography, Christian doctrines and Old Testament prophets. He continued in this school until about 1948.

While teaching he was also very active in the church, serving as Sunday school teacher, member of the church council, and as treasurer. For some years he was treasurer of the Bharatiya General Conference Mennonite Church.

In 1949 he was called to be the pastor of the church in Jagdeeshpur. He was then ordained as an elder in the General Conference Mennonite Church and he served that church until 1951. He then returned to Janjgir and became the pastor there. Besides his pastoral work he translated many tracts from English to Hindi and actively distributed them. He also wrote a number of dramas on the lives of Jeremiah and St. Paul.

His life was characterized by a deep faith in Jesus Christ and wherever one would meet him one could sense his dedication to Christ and the church. John Walters died 1 March 1962.
