de Waard, a Dutch Mennonite family originating on a polder near Pieterzijl in the province of Groningen, called the Waarden, from which this family has derived its name. Until c1850 they were nearly all farmers. Many of them served as deacons in the Pieterzijl (since 1892 called Grijpskerk) Mennonite congregation, and Jacob Symons, a farmer at Ruigewaard, 1726-d. c1760 was a lay preacher of this congregation, as was his son Jan Jacobs de Waard, who served 1753-d. c1790.

Sytze Klazes de Waard (Pieterzijl, 1796-Haarlem, 1856), married to W. J. Krythe, was trained for the ministry at the Amsterdam Mennonite Seminary and served at Mensingeweer 1821-26, Akkrum 1826-28, and Haarlem 1828-d.56. He published, as far as is known, only three addresses on religious subjects held before the Haarlem Department of the Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen.

His grandson Sytze Klazes de Waard (Groningen, 1849-Alassio, Italy, 1915), married to M. E. Backer, at first studied mathematics and physics, thereupon literature and theology, and after finishing his study at the Amsterdam seminary served as Mennonite pastor at Westzaan-Zuid 1879-83, The Hague 1883-94, and Utrecht 1894-1911, in which year he retired because of poor health. He published the dedication sermon, Tempelwijding (The Hague, 1886, reprinted 1886), delivered in September 1886, when the young congregation of The Hague acquired a meetinghouse. He also published a volume of sermons, Overdenkingen (Amsterdam, 1915), and a number of sermons preached on special occasions.

Another Sytze Klazes de Waard (1821-1911) obtained his M.D. degree at Groningen and practiced medicine for more than fifty years in his home town. He was for about the same time a treasurer of the Pieterzijl (Grijpskerk) congregation and published a booklet on the Mennonite history of the area in which he lived: Aanteekeningen uit de Geschiedenis der Doopsgezinden in 't Westerkwartier (Groningen, 1901), which contains many particulars on the De Waard family.
