Vries, Simon Sakes de (ca. 1723-1793)
Simon Sakes de Vries, born ca. 1723 at Deventer, Netherlands, died there 1793, apparently a Mennonite, made a legacy to the Deventer Mennonite congregation. He was educated at the Athenaeum Illustre at Deventer, Utrecht University, obtaining his Ph.D. degree in 1744 from Leiden University. Oxford University granted him an honorary Ph.D. degree. De Vries, who was unmarried, and obviously a man of means, then returned to Deventer and divided his time between his brewery and his learned studies and writings.
