Vorsterman, a former Mennonite family at Amsterdam, Holland, from ca. 1620 until the 18th century, when it died out. A well-known member of this family was Jacob Vorsterman, d.1729, who was very active as a trustee and secretary and treasurer of the Dutch Mennonite Committee for Foreign Needs. With Herman Schijn and five other brethren he presented a petition in the name of the Dutch Mennonites to the Bernese government in behalf of the suppressed Swiss Mennonites in 1710. The great relief action for the Swiss refugees in 1710-1713 was described by Vorsterman in his Relaas wegens hetafvoeren der Doopsgezinden uit Zwitserland en het overbrengen van velen hunner in Nederland, which account is found in manuscript in the Amsterdam Mennonite archives. Jacob Vorsterman was four times a deacon of the Amsterdam Zonist congregation. His father Abraham Vorsterman had also been a deacon of this church. His son Abraham joined the Amsterdam Lamist congregation, of which he was a deacon 1743-1749.
