Volbot, Abraham Davidsz (17th century)

Abraham Davidsz Volbot (Volboet) was a member of the Flemish Mennonite congregation "in den Blok" at Haarlem. After the Reformed pas­tor of Haarlem, Petrus Bontemps, had attacked the Mennonites and had been replied to by the Mennonite deacon Joost Hendricks of Amsterdam, Volbot also entered into the polemics by publishing (under the pseudonym of Gerard van Vryburgh) two pamphlets with curious titles: Hollandsche Zeep tegen Uytheemsche Vlecken . . . (Am­sterdam, 1643, repr. 1644) and, after the reply of Bontemps, Loogh-Water op de Laster-Vlecken van P.B. . . . (Amsterdam, 1644).

A. D. Volbot was a strict Flemish Mennonite, an opponent of Galenus Abrahamsz and of Collegiantism in 1655. About his private life nothing is known.
