Verkolje family
Verkolje (Vercoilge, Vercolie), a Mennonite family found in the 17th and 18th centuries at Amsterdam, Holland. They had emigrated from Kortrijk in Flanders, Belgium, where Jossine Andries, the wife of Rougier van Quoilge (see Stijntgen Vercoilgen), suffered martyrdom in 1567. In Amsterdam they belonged to the Flemish congregation; later they were in both the Lamist and the Zonist churches. Both branches died out in the 18th century.
It could not be ascertained whether Johannes (Jan) Verkolje (Amsterdam, 1650-Delft, 1693) and his son Nicolaas Verkolje, b. 1673 at Delft, from 1700 living at Amsterdam and died there in 1746, both painters, who had some reputation during their lifetime, also were Mennonites, belonging to this same family. The Amsterdam Rijksmuseum has five paintings by Jan Verkolje and one by Nicolaas.
