Van den Tempel, a former Mennonite family, found at Emden, East Friesland, Germany, and in the Netherlands, particularly at Amsterdam, but also at Leiden. Jan Tonnis (1607-72) was a Mennonite cloth merchant at Emden; he had been trained for this business by his uncle(?) Jacob Theunis(z) at Amsterdam. Jan Tonnis was not only a successful businessman but also a son of the muses, publishing a moralistic-religious play in verse: Josephs droef en bly-eind Spel (Groningen, 1639). Since his shop was called "In den Tempel van Salomo" he was commonly called Jan Tempel, and van den Tempel became the family name of his descendants. The family name was also adopted by the artist Abraham van den Tempel, son of the Mennonite preacher and painter Lambert Jacobsz, a cousin of Jan Tonnis.
