Stoesz, David (1842-1903)

David Stoesz: minister and elder; born 5 October 1842 in Schoenthal, Bergthal Colony, South Russia, the youngest of 11 children of Jacob Stoesz (23 December 1779 - 16 September 1859) and Barbara Wiens (11 August 1803 - 16 June 1878). On 27 November 1862 David married Maria Wiebe (18 December 1842 - 13 August 1912), daughter of Heinrich Wiebe (1 July 1806 - 7 December 1865) and Anganetha (Thiessen) Wiebe (11 December 1813 - 21 March 1884). David and Maria had seven children, with five reaching adulthood: Anganetha, David, Jacob, Maria and Cornelius. David died 16 January 1903 in the Rural Municipality of Hanover, MB and is buried in the Bergthal village cemetery.

David was elected as a minister in the Bergthal Colony in 1869. David and his family settled in Manitoba in 1874. He was elected to serve as assistant elder of the Chortitzer Mennonite Church in Manitoba in 1879. In 1882 he succeeded Elder Gerhard Wiebe. Stoesz served the church with communion, baptisms and ordinations in various communities including Fargo, North Dakota and Saskatchewan.
