The first Mennonite families settled in the St. John Valley region in southwest New Brunswick, Canada, in the fall of 1989. In 1990, Missions Canada, the Canadian missions arm of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, and the Colonization Board of the Church, responsible for finding new areas for settlement that are suitable for agriculture, chose Centreville, New Brunswick, for the planting of a new church. The first services were held in homes until November 1990 when the congregation began to gather in St. David's United Church in Lakeville. The first communion service was held on 30 January 1991 and the church officially organized on 5 February 1991 as the St. John Valley Mennonite Church.

The congregation purchased nine acres one and one-half miles south of Centreville in December 1992 and began construction of a sanctuary in October 1993. Construction was completed in February 1994 and a dedication service was held on 6 August 1995.

The congregation also operates the St. John Valley School.

In 1992 the congregation initiated the mission outreach that led to the Bridgewater Church of God in Christ, Mennonite in Bridgewater, Maine.
