Sherk is a Mennonite family name that has been traced to Sumiswald in the Emmenthal in the Swiss canton of Bern. As a result of persecutions in Switzerland members of the family moved first to the Palatinate; later some migrated to Pennsylvania. The family name is found today in Karlsruhe, Germany and in Luxembourg, as well as in the United States and Canada. The first of this name in North America was Joseph Schoerg, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1727 and settled in Lancaster County, Pa. Others of Joseph Schoerg's family came at various times up to 1747 and settled in Pennsylvania. Several descendants moved to Ontario (then Upper Canada) after 1798. A grandson, also named Joseph Schoerg, was the first Mennonite pioneer to settle in what is now called Waterloo County, the largest Mennonite settlement in Ontario. David Sherk was a leading Mennonite Church (MC) minister in Waterloo County. The name occurs frequently in eastern Pennsylvania and in Ontario, and has been found occasionally in Alberta and British Columbia, and in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas and other states and provinces. Records show that many members of this family have served as missionaries, ministers and bishops both in Mennonite and other churches.
