Shalom Mennonite Church (Indianapolis, Indiana, USA)
Shalom Mennonite Church in Indianapolis, Indiana, began as a church plant of First Mennonite Church in 1991. After First Mennonite built a new building in 1984, it decided that if attendance grew to more than 300, it would consider establishing a new congregation.
In 1991, First Mennonite commissioned a small group of its members to launch Shalom Mennonite. These members included Dagne Assefa, an elder and occasional preacher who had been a Mennonite pastor in his native Ethiopia. He became pastor of Shalom and was ordained a few years later.
The group initially rented space in the Ivywood Day Care Center on East 62nd Street. In 1996, it bought and remodeled an existing church structure on 32nd Street with the help of First Mennonite Church and the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference.
By 2006, Shalom Mennonite partnered with First Mennonite to help support shelter for the homeless and supported Meserete Kristos College in Ethiopia.
