Salem New Order Amish Settlement (Salem, Indiana, USA)
The Salem New Order Amish settlement near Salem, Indiana, USA was established in the mid-1960s.
The settlement for a number of years was a mix of plain Amish and Mennonite groups that had a vision for a unique Christian community. An early leader was Harry Wanner who had been ordained as a conservative Stauffer Mennonite minister, lived in a settlement in Belize for a time, before settling with like-minded people in Salem, Indiana. Their vision was for a church detached from the world as far as possible (farming with horse-drawn equipment, living without electricity), yet spiritually-minded and evangelistic, actively involving its children and young people until they caught the vision on their own. Wanner left the Salem community in 1981 because he desired more English-language preaching and was open to rebaptizing people who did not consider their Old Order Amish baptism adequate.
In 2014 Salem families were engaged in farming and various forms of construction and woodworking.
The Twin Oaks School began in 1973 in a small cement block building. In 1996 a large addition with a basement was connected to the original building.
In 2014 the settlement was part of the New Order Amish. The bishop was Nelson Garber. There was one district with a total of 21 family units. The settlement used a church house, but was considered a "non-electric" settlement.
