Reesor, Christian (1833-1915)
Christian Reesor: an Old Order Mennonite leader; born on 16 April 1833 in Markham Township, York County, Ontario, the son of John Eby Reesor, a Mennonite preacher, and Maria (Burkholder) Reesor. His home was on the site of the present Reesor (Wisler) Mennonite Church. His brothers Simeon and Noah were older than Christian while Benjamin and Susanna (Diller) were younger. His first marriage was to Esther (1838-68), daughter of John Hoover, in 1856. His second marriage was to Rebecca Miller (1837-1917) of Pennsylvania in 1885. Christian Reesor died on 26 December 1915.
Christian farmed directly south of Cedar Grove in Scarborough. He was ordained minister in 1863 and bishop in 1867. In the schism of 1889 in Ontario he allied himself with bishops Abraham Martin of Waterloo and Christian Gayman of Cayuga. This was the beginning of Old Order Mennonites in Ontario. One of his sons was Thomas Reesor.
