Quiring, Jacob (1876-1942)
Jacob Quiring (1875-1942), a Mennonite evangelist and teacher, son of Elder Johann Quiring at Köppental, Trakt Mennonite settlement, Russia, was educated in the Realschule at Weierhof (Palatinate, Germany) 1886-1892, and the Predigerschule at Basel, Switzerland, 1893-95. Upon his return to Russia he served as conference evangelist in the Mennonite Church 1897-1905. In 1905 he came to America and served as evangelist in General Conference Mennonite churches until 1907. In 1908 he married Dora Haury, daughter of S. S. Haury, Newton, Kansas. He was graduated from the Moody Bible Institute in 1909, received the B.A. degree from the University of Chicago in 1912, the B.D. degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in 1913, and the M.A. degree from the University of Chicago that same year. In 1913-1915 and 1918-1921 he studied in the University of Berlin, where he also served as pastor of the Salem Deaconess Home. In 1921-1930 he taught Bible at Bluffton College and Witmarsum Theological Seminary. During the last twelve years of his life he lived in New York City, continuing his Old Testament studies at Columbia University. He died 27 October 1942. In his younger years he was an outstanding Mennonite evangelist, and in his later life an unusual Old Testament scholar.
