Pleshanovo Mennonite Church (Pleshanovo Mennonite settlement, Orenburg Oblast, Russia)
Pleshanovo (Neu-Samara) Mennonite Church, Samara, Russia, was established in 1891, the early days of the Pleshanovo settlement. In 1905 the baptized membership numbered 1,034, and the total number of souls was 2,689. The elder at that time was Daniel Boschmann, assisted by Johann Isaak, Peter Stobbe, Heinrich Peters, David Warkentin, Heinrich Unruh, and Johann Braun. The church was located in the village of Pleshanovo.
The settlers, in distinction from the "Old Samara" settlement, came from the Molotschna settlement and not directly from Prussia. Contact with other settlements was lively. The Revolution disrupted the economic and religious life, but gradually an adjustment took place and religious activities were resumed. Unser Blatt reported regularly in 1925-1928 on song festivals and other activities of the church. In 1926 there was a song festival and a course for choir directors in Lugovsk in which nine choirs and 200 singers participated. In 1927 ministers from the settlements conducted a Bible study conference in the villages of Pleshanovo. The Mennonite settlement did not disintegrate during World War II as stated in the article Neu-Samara, but is still in existence although great changes have taken place. Few of the old ministers have remained but young ones have taken their place. Revival meetings and baptismal services have been common occurrences since the death of Stalin. Ministers named in letters include Wilhelm Sawatsky of Lugovsk and Peter Engebrecht.
