Pieter Stayaerts (Styaert, Stayert) and his cousin Jan Styaertsz, two seekers after God, Ana­baptist martyrs, who lived with their parents in Mereedor (Meerendree), a village of Flanders, Bel­gium. Through searching the Scriptures they ar­rived at the belief that baptism is necessary for the regenerated, and traveled to Germany to look for others of their faith. Being baptized there, but not finding satisfaction, probably because they were averse to the revolutionary views of many Anabaptists, they returned to their home, were seized there, were held prisoner in a vile pit, and then be­headed in 1538 at Vinderhout, a village near Ghent, Belgium. This account by van Braght (Mart. Mir. D 44, E 449) is correct, as has been shown by the official documents. Van Braght, however, lists another martyr by the same name, Pieter Stayert, who with some others was executed at Ghent in 1569. This Pieter Stayert is commemorated in the hymn  "Alsmen schreef duyst vijfhondert jaer ende twee en tsestich mede," found in the Lietboecxken. Verheyden (Gent, 56) did not find this latter martyr in the records of Ghent.
