North Baltimore Mennonite Church (Baltimore, Maryland, USA)
The North Baltimore Mennonite Church began as a church plant by the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1985. Bob and Ruby Lehman initiated it; Frank and Evelyn Nice joined the effort in September 1986. The group held its first meeting in Trinity Church of the Brethren on 4 January 1987 after meeting as a house fellowship in Lehman's home previously.
The congregation purchased the building in which they were meeting in the fall of 1987 for $300,000. The building was initially erected by the Methodists in 1897 and included some additions.
The congregation has attracted persons of various backgrounds, including students from nearby Johns Hopkins University. By the mid-1990s, it had four worship teams that brought variety to worship style, and four small groups met in homes during the week. It also made its building available to community groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous.
In the 2000s, the former Youth Evangelism Service (YES) building, a large house in Reservoir Hill, became available when Eastern Mennonite Missions moved the YES program. Renamed Reservoir Hill House of Peace, the center eventually became home to a Voluntary Service unit, a Mennonite Central Committee office, a residence for persons seeking political asylum, as well as various programs for youth. In addition, the congregation enabled two Ten Thousand Villages stores to open and became involved in housing homeless families through the Interfaith Housing Network.
