Jacob W. Nickel: teacher and pastor; born 15 March 1912 in Krassikov, Pleshanovo (Neu Samara) Mennonite Settlement, Russia to Jacob J. Nickel (b. 1886) and Anna (Wiebe) Nickel (1886-1955). On 29 October 1941 he married Frieda Unger in Coaldale, Alberta, Canada. They had five children: Gwen, Edgar, Lois, Glen and Vicki. Jacob died on 18 November 1983 in Wichita, Kansas, USA and is buried in the Lorraine Avenue Mennonite Church cemetery in Wichita, Kansas.

In 1924 the Nickel family immigrated to Canada, settling in Aberdeen, Saskatchewan. Jacob's father had been a minister in Neu Samara, and became the leader of the Aberdeen Mennonite Church upon their arrival in Canada. Jacob began his post secondary education at the Winkler Bible School. From 1944 until 1946 Jacob served as the pastor of the United Mennonite Church in Mission (now Cedar Valley Mennonite Church) while teaching at Bethel Bible Institute. Between 1946 and 1948 he earned a BA degree at Bethel College in Newton, Kansas. By 1958 he had completed both an MA and a PhD at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado.

Jacob was active in a variety of ministries. During World War II he served as a chaplain to conscientious objectors. Between 1948 and 1950 he provided pastoral care in several Brazilian and Paraguayan churches under the auspices of the General Conference Mennonite Church. He also served as a minister in several congregations. Primarily, however, he is remembered for his long teaching career, with appointments at Menno Bible Institute in Didsbury, Alberta (1938-1942), Bethel Bible Institute in Abbotsford, British Columbia (1943-1946), Bethel College in Newton, Kansas (1958-1961), Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana (1962-1965), and Friends University in Wichita, Kansas (1965-1977).
