Nauk, Martin (d. 1530?)
Martin Nauk (von Nockh, von Neck), of Deutschnofen in southern Tyrol, Austria, was an Anabaptist martyr. He was one of the Anabaptist leaders of Neumarkt in the Adige Valley. In November 1529 the authorities seized Wolfgang Stroel (Strolen) and his wife and Nauk's wife. Nauk escaped. This was reported to Ferdinand, who replied with two decrees, 27 November and 9 December 1529, that Stroel and his wife were to be taken to the criminal court, which would be held by the judge of Kaltern. Nauk's wife was to be spared until the birth of her child. Since the cross-examination of the Stroels revealed that they had been baptized by Michael Kneusser (Kürsner?), a search should be made for him as the "principal" and also for the fugitive leaders Wolfgang of Moos and Martin Nauk of Deutschnofen. Nauk must have fallen into the hands of his pursuers in January 1530, for the Innsbruck authorities ordered that Martin Nauk and Benedikt Gamper (Campner, the former priest?) of Breitenberg should be examined further on some specified articles of faith. The report of the questioning stated that the two men were leaders and were said to have misled many people. They died as martyrs in Neumarkt.
