Meyer

A common family name, Meyer is also found among the Mennonites. As early as 1526-1532 a number of Anabaptists in the Swiss cantons of Zürich, Schaffhausen, Bern, and Lucerne had this name. Among them was Hans Meyer (Pfistermeyer), an active preacher. Later there were Meyer Anabaptists in the canton of Aarau, most of whom immigrated to Alsace and the Palatinate in the 17th and 18th centuries, and from there to North America. Several members of this family served as preachers at Immelhausen in Baden, Germany, in the 18th century. One Meyer family emigrated from Switzerland to the Netherlands in the early 18th century. Dutch ministers with the name Meyer, but not related to the above family, are Joost Jurriaensz Meyer, a preacher of the Old Frisian (Arke Noach) congregation in Amsterdam from 1709 until he died in 1749, and J.A.A. Meijer (b. 1913), pastor at Ternaard 1940-1946 and at Zutphen beginning in 1946.
