Mennonite Disciple Mission Joliette (Joliette, Quebec, Canada)
Mennonite Disciple Mission Joliette located in Joliette, Québec, Canada is a part of the Mennonite Disciple Mission (MDM) association of congregations who worship in Swahili. Swahili is spoken in six African countries; MDM Joliette seeks to minister to newcomers to Canada who have recently arrived from Africa.
The Mennonite Disciple Mission (MDM) was led in 2020 by Bishop Garant Sungura, a bishop in the Burundi Mennonite Church. He founded MDM in 2002. Goshen Mennonite Church in Ottawa, Ontario was also a part of the MDM association.
Victor Mubikalo, pastor of the congregation, came to Joliette, QC many years ago, he worshiped with Église évangélique Mennonite de Joliette, an MCEC congregation. When that congregation closed, African families who had worshiped there started to dream of starting a new church together. They began meeting in the former building.
By 2020 on every Sunday a “normal African Sunday service” occurred in Joliette where approximately 60 people gathered. On Thursdays prayer meetings were held. Services were held in Swahili or French and were translated between the two languages.
MDM Joliette became an MCEC congregation with provisional membership in April 2020.
