Menaldum (Friesland, Netherlands)

Menaldurn (Menaem), a village in the Dutch province of Friesland, where Leenaert Bouwens baptized 7 persons in 1563-1565 and 81 in 1568-1582. In the 17th century it was the seat of a Mennonite congregation, belonging to the Jan Jacobsz group. About 1623 the district governor made trouble for the Mennonites here because they did not want to have their marriages performed by the magistrate. A Sierck Annes was even punished by having his furniture confiscated. Later on the congregation was called Old Flemish. The small congregation, of which there is no further information, united with the Jan Jacobsz congregation at neighboring Franeker shortly after 1743.
