Mary Joris (d. 1557)
Mary Joris wasan Anabaptist martyr, who, "removed from her husband and children," was sentenced to death with Joriaen Simons and Clement Dirks, and languished in chains in Haarlem, Holland. Since she was pregnant the execution was postponed until she should be delivered; but she died in prison before it happened (1557). Joriaen, Clement, and Mary are celebrated in a hymn, "Hoort toe ghy Christen scharen" (Hear, ye multitudes of Christians), inserted in Nieu Liedenboeck of 1562 (re-edited by Wackernagel), while Mary's name is also found in the hymn "Hoort vrienden al hier in dit aertsche dal" (Hear all ye friends in this earthly dale), hymn No. 20 of the <em>Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren</em>. According to the Bibliographie this martyr was probably the wife of the bookseller Dionys, who was also arrested but escaped from prison, and her name was Mary (Maritgen) Servaes. This surmise is based on S. Ampzing's history of Haarlem; but this book is not very reliable.
