Markham Chinese Mennonite Church (Markham, Ontario, Canada)
In the spring of 1990, the Toronto Chinese Mennonite Church, with the encouragement of its former pastor, Winfred Soong, formed a church planting committee led by Lai Mak to explore possibilities in the rapidly growing Chinese community in Markham, Ontario. They were encouraged by the Hagerman Mennonite church, which lent free use of its location and facilities.
The group started with Bible studies, followed by Sunday afternoon worship services and various children programs. In 1993 the Markham Chinese Mennonite Church was accepted as an emerging congregation in Mennonite Church Eastern Canada. In 1995 it began to hold worship services on Sunday mornings in a different part of the building, and shared its Sunday school program with Hagerman Mennonite for children and youth.
The partnership between the congregations increased when Markham Chinese Mennonite purchased the parsonage adjacent to the church from Hagerman. Although each congregation now owned part of the property, the space was freely shared by both groups for their programs. The members of Hagerman agreed that the funds from this sale would go to help the new Community Mennonite Church becoming established in Stouffville.
Markham Chinese Mennonite Church has continued to serve the Markham community with Bible studies and English classes, and attempts to reach out to new immigrants in the community.
