The Marion Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, at Marion, South Dakota, USA, had its roots in some of the 1870s immigrants to the United States. Jacob and Eva (Dirks) Jantz moved from Lehigh, Kansas, to Marion, South Dakota, in 1887. He invited some ministers to visit the people in that area because they wished to be baptized. In 1891 ministers John Holdeman, John Dueck, and Tobias Unruh responded to this letter.

By 1893 seven families were worshiping together in homes and desired more spiritual teaching, so they sent another letter to Minister John Holdeman to help them. Ministers Tobias Unruh, Daniel Holdeman, and John Holdeman responded to this letter. In February, six couples were baptized, namely, Jacob P. and Helena (Dirks) Unruh, Peter B. and Elizabeth (Jantz) Becker, John B. and Elizabeth (Deckert) Unruh, Benjamin H. and Maria (Dirks) Koehn, Peter J. and Eva (Deckert) Becker, and Peter and Agnetta (Schmidt) Jantz.

Jacob P. Unruh was ordained as a minister shortly after being baptized by John Holdeman. John and Agnetta (Becker) Schartner were baptized in May 1896.

Some of these couples moved to more-established church areas beginning in 1898 through 1907. The Jacob P. Unruh and Peter B. Becker families remained in Marion until 1920 when they moved to Kansas. Jacob P. Unruh became one of the Grace Church of God in Christ, Mennonite ministers after moving there.

The Schartner Cemetery near Marion, South Dakota, is the burial place for four mothers and five children. The lineage from these families includes ministers and deacons in the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, in the United States and Canada.
