Marie Baernt Gerytsdochter (d. 1545)

Marie Baernt Gerytsdochter, a native of Achtersloot near IJsselstein, Dutch province of Utrecht, who had been (re) baptized in the spring of 1534 by Gerrit Ghysen of Benschop in his house at Benschop. She was a daughter of Brechte Lambrechtsdochter and married to Gheryt Kievit of Benschop, who was put to death at Amsterdam in 1540 because of revolutionary activities (he had apparently robbed some Catholic churches). Marie also belonged to the revolutionary wing of Anabaptism, being a follower of Jan van Batenburg and Appelman to whom she was married after the death of her first husband. She was apprehended in May 1544 and executed at The Hague on 26 June 1545, by drowning. She probably repented and returned to the Catholic Church, because she was buried in consecrated earth. Marie Baernt Gerytsdochter is one of the most striking examples of revolutionary Anabaptism, which had nothing to do with real and peaceful Anabaptism.
