Maerten Jansz (Jansen) Corendrager (Maerten van Delft), an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake at Delft, Dutch province of South Holland, on 5 February 1572, with Jan Hendriksz (Jan Hendricksen). Their death was commemorated in the song "Verhoort ons droevich claghen, o Heer in dese noot" (Hear, O Lord, our sad complaint in this distress). Both this hymn, found in the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren, and also the detailed account found in the Dutch martyrbooks of 1615 and later, including van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror, give substantial information about these two martyrs, who had to endure many cruelties and died loyal, Maerten Jansz with the words, "O Lord, be merciful to me, poor sinner, who am not worthy to suffer for Thy name; but Thou hast made me worthy." Maerten Jansz was a citizen of Delft, a grain porter (hence the name) of the market place. The official sentence of these martyrs is found in the Martyrs' Mirror.
