Een Lietboecxken, tracterende van den Offer des Heeren, int welke oude en nieuwe Liedekens, wt verscheyden copien vergadert zijn, om by het Offerboeck geuoecht te worden, is a collection of 25 hymns; the oldest known edition is dated 1563. These songs, some of which have genuine poetic feeling and merit, commemorate the men and women who died as martyrs to their faith; many were written by eyewitnesses. Some were printed on loose leaves and distributed soon after the execution had taken place. The influence of these hymns was enormous. They acquainted the populace with the faith and courage of the martyrs, and also gave strength to the imprisoned Anabaptists. How often we read that they sang a hymn on their way to the execution. The songs were adopted into hymnals.
The Lietboecxken was always published with the old martyrbook Offer des Heeren; only the year of the first edition of the Offer is 1562, that of the first Lietboecxken 1563. This first edition apparently was printed at Emden by Nicolaes Biestkens. There are eleven editions known of the (Offer and) Lietboecxken: (1) 1562-63; (2) 1566, n.p.; (3) 1567, n.p. (apparently printed by Biestkens); (4) 1570, n.p., probably also a Biestkens publication; (5) 1578, n.p., probably also by Biestkens; (6) 1578, n.p. (same year as edition 5), probably printed at Delft by Aelbrecht Heyndricksz; (7) 1580, n.p., probably by Biestkens; (8) 1590, published by Willem Jansz Buys at Amsterdam; (9) 1592, n.p. (printer unknown); (10) 1595 at Amsterdam by Willem Jansz Buys; (11) 1599 at Harlingen by Peter Sebastiaenszoon. Editions 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 are found in the [[Amsterdam Mennonite Library (Bibliotheek en Archief van de Vereenigde Doopsgezinde Gemeente te Amsterdam)|Amsterdam Mennonite Library]]; Nos. 4, 5, 7, and 10 in the Mennonite Historical Library (Goshen, Indiana); Nos. 2 and 6 in the Library of the University of Gent; Nos. 5 and 6 in the Library of the University of Utrecht. Editions 1-4 and 7 contain 25 hymns; No. 5 has 26; Nos. 8, 10, and 11 have 28; the only existing copy of No. 9 is incomplete. Fourteen of the hymns published in the Lietboecxken had been published before in Dutch hymnbooks. Three of these hymns are also found in the Ausbund. A new edition of the Lietboecxken and the Offer was published in 1904 at The Hague, with introduction and notes by Samuel Cramer in Bibliotheca Reformatoria Neerlandica II.
