Chester Kindig Lehman, born 5 November 1895, died 2 March 1980, first dean of Eastern Mennonite College and Seminary, 1923-1956, exerted significant influence in building its academic strength. He set an example of intellectual pursuit in the context of full-orbed faith with his professional credentials and successful teaching for 50 years in biblical studies, systematic and biblical theology, Greek, and ethics. He led in development of the advanced Bible curriculum and the founding of the seminary. His leadership also bore fruit in state accreditation of EMC as a four-year college in 1947. He fostered positive relationships between eastern and western regions of the United States in Mennonite higher education. His writings include The Inadequacy of Evolution as a World View, The Holy Spirit and the Holy Life, Theology of the Old Testament, and Theology of the New Testament. A vigorous promoter of music, he directed choruses and helped compile four Mennonite hymnals and song books. Over a period of about 60 years he pastored four congregations near Harrisonburg, Virginia.
He married Myra Kendig on 26 May 1921. They were parents of three daughters and a son.
