Lapp (Lappe, Lape, Lap) family
Lapp (Lappe, Lape, Lap), a Mennonite family name. The first settler by this name to come to America was Johannes (L) Lap, who arrived in Philadelphia on 29 September 1733, on the Pink Mary, which sailed from Rotterdam via Plymouth. He settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and became the progenitor of the Lapp family in the Mennonite Church. One of his descendants was Deacon Samuel W. Lapp of the Line Lexington, Pennsylvania, congregation, who moved to Nebraska in 1879 and is better known as the father of four sons who became bishops, and two of them foreign missionaries in the Mennonite Church. They are Daniel G. (1867-1952), who spent the greater part of his life at Roseland, NE. He was a widely traveled and an outstanding bishop in the western part of the church in the United States and served on a number of church-wide committees and boards; Samuel G. (1869-1916), who served the South English, Iowa, congregation; Mahlon C. (1871-1923), who was a pioneer missionary to India 1901-23; and George J. (1879-1951), who served five terms as a missionary to India and was also a widely known and much-used speaker in the churches in America. Other descendants of this first settler include two deacons of the Line Lexington congregation, Abraham (1777-1855) and Henry B. (1853-1931) ; and John E. Lapp (1905-1988), bishop in the Plain congregation, Lansdale, Pennsylvania. John Lapp (1798-1878) was bishop at Clarence, New York.
The progenitor of the large Lapp family in the Old Order Amish Church is thought to have been Michael Lapp (b. 6 April 1737), who likely arrived in Philadelphia on 22 September 1752. This family greatly outnumbers in size the family in the Mennonite Church. The Family Almanac (Scottdale, PA, 1954) listed 17 ordained men by this name among the Amish, whereas the Mennonite Church listed but one.
