Löwenberg, Michael (1821-1874)
Michael Löwenberg, preacher of the Mennonite church at Weierhof, Palatinate, Germany, founder of the Realschule at Weierhof, b. 8 November 1821, at Weierhof, d. there 13 December 1874. He married the widow of Johannes Dahlem in 1848. Löwenberg received his training at the normal school in Beuggen. In 1848 he opened a private elementary school at Weierhof. In 1849 he was called to the ministry of the congregation there, serving until his death in 1874. In 1868 he published in the Mennonitische Blätter an appeal to "the Mennonites in Germany, South Russia, and Holland" to establish a Christian school, the principal purpose of which would be to train preachers. On 2 December 1867 the school was opened on a modest scale, and under the direction of Ernst Göbel it became the largest private school in the Palatinate. (See Real-Anstalt am Donnersberg.) It was first located in the Weberhäuschen, which had been built in 1810 by the original Johannes Löwenberg. One of Michael's sons, Thomas (1849-1928), was pastor of the Weierhof congregation 1873-1882, and 1882-1917 pastor at Ibersheim.
