Kaars family

Kaars is a Mennonite family found in the Dutch province of North Holland. The earliest representatives of this family are found in the small congregation of Krommeniedijk, where in the late 17th century they were manufacturers of canvas. Some of them were deacons of the church. A lateral branch of this family is the Kaars Sijpestein family of Krommenie, where they were manufacturers of canvas and where some of the world famous linoleum and oil manufacturing plants of the Kaars Sijpesteins were found. The founder of this big business was Hendrik Sijpestein (1773-1835), married to Bregje Kaars (1775-1803). He was a son of the (non-Mennonite) schoolteacher, later public notary, Willem Sijpestein. Most members of the Kaars Sijpestein family have been Mennonites. Willem Kaars Sijpestein of Krommenie was a member of the Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit (General Dutch Mennonite Conference).
