Johannestal Mennonite Church (General Conference Mennonite), located at Hillsboro, Kansas was organized in 1882 by Mennonites who had come from the Deutsch-Wymysle and Deutsch-Kazun congregations near Warsaw, Polish Russia. They began worshiping in private homes and in schools after their arrival and officially organized in 1882, joining the General Conference Mennonite Church in 1896. The first building was erected in 1884 three miles (five km) north of Hillsboro. In 1898 a new church was built which was later enlarged and replaced by a new one in 1922, to which a brick addition was added in 1951. The congregation was first served by John S. Hirschler. In 1886 John Gerbrandt and John Ewert were elected ministers. Gerbrandt was ordained elder in 1890.

There was a schism and for a time there were a First and a Second Johannestal Church, the latter being served by John D. Bartel as elder. Both groups used the same church. When John D. Bartel moved to North Dakota in 1897 John Plenert was elected elder, having been ordained to the ministry in 1893. After John Gerbrandt moved to Saskatchewan in 1905 the two groups reunited under Elder Plenert, who was succeeded by S.M. Musselman in 1937; Musselman died in 1938 and was succeeded by J. M. Regier, who served the congregation 1939-1951. Roy Henry became the elder in May 1951 and was succeeded in 1954 by Delton W. Franz, and in 1956 by Esko Loewen. In 1956 the congregation had a membership of 199.
