Jihlava (Kraj Vysočina, Czech Republic)
Jihlava, (German: Iglau), is a city with a population of 50,000 in 2004, in Czech Republic in the area known historically as Moravia (coordinates: 49° 24′ 1″ N, 15° 35′ 26″ E). The Anabaptist movement early gained adherents here, but through the influence of Paul Speratus, Lutheranism predominated and Anabaptism was suppressed, with actions in 1529, 1536, and 1537. However, scattered individual Anabaptists continued to be found here and toward the end of the century increased in number. The city council then took special action to suppress them, and among others arrested their leader and preacher Hans Springer in 1592, and cruelly executed him.
