Jan Hendricksen (Hendriksz), from Zwartewaal, Dutch province of South Holland, an Anabaptist martyr, living at Delfshaven near Rotterdam, the steersman of a herring-drifter, was burned at the stake at Delft, Dutch province of South Holland, on 5 February 1572, with Maerten Jansz Corendrager. He was held in prison for more than a year. While in prison he wrote a moving letter of farewell to his wife, urging her to continue faithfully in the doctrine. He wrote in a similar vein to Maerten Jansz, his fellow prisoner, and also to his brother and sister. His report of his repeated cross-examinations shows an amazing knowledge of the Bible and a firmness of faith not usual in an unlettered man. His death is the subject of the hymn "Verhoort ons droevich claghen" (Hear our sad lament), which is found in the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren, 1578 and later editions.
