Jahrbuch der altevangelischen Taufgesinnten
Jahrbuch der altevangelischen Taufgesinnten oder Mennoniten-Gemeinden, published by H. G. Mannhardt (Danzig, 1888), is a continuation of the Jahrbuch der Mennoniten-Gemeinden in West- und Ostpreussen, published by the same author in 1884. The latter contains first a New Year's sermon of the author, then statistics of the churches in East and West Prussia of 1852 and 1882, showing that there had been a decline of 655 in membership. It is followed by the essays: "Die Mennoniten in der dramatischen Literatur," and "Ein Beitrag zu den Rechtsverhaltnissen der Mennoniten," which deals with a suit against the Danzig Mennonite Church, which was decided in favor of the church. In conclusion he presents a brief chronicle of events in the Mennonite churches.
The yearbook of 1888 is richer in content. It contains exact statistics of the Mennonites in the various countries: Germany, Switzerland, France, Holland, Russia, and some from America, reporting the date of origin, membership, names of preachers and elders, and the institutions. The second part of the booklet is entitled Verschiedenes aus der Tatigkeit und den Einrichtungen der Mennoniten, and presents articles on (1) the home and foreign mission work of the Mennonites; (2) the Vereinigung der Mennoniten-Gemeinden im Deutschen Reich and its origin; (3) instruction among the Mennonites of Russia, with an interesting account of their school for the deaf in Blumenort; (4) the school at the Weierhof near Marnheim (Palatinate); and (5) the text of several laws and regulations concerning the Mennonites. Ludwig Keller gives a list of books important to the history and doctrine of the Mennonites; the book closes with a recommendation of Mennonite books and periodicals.
