Hulshoff family
Hulshoff is a Dutch Mennonite family, whose members are still found in a large number of Mennonite congregations. The ancestor of the family was Berend Jansz (born August 1635, died April 1694), whose father had moved to the "Hulshoff," a farm near Zenderen in the district of Twenthe, Dutch province of Overijssel. Berend Jansz, who was a spinner and weaver (and apparently also a farmer),and who was married to Geessien Hendriks, was an elder of the Groningen Old Flemish Mennonite congregation at Borne, as were his sons Hendrik Berends Hulshoff and Goossen Berends Hulshoff, serving 1695-ca. 1727. Another son of Berend Jansz was Abraham Berends Hulshoff, born 1674 at Zenderen, died 1759 at Groningen; he was a merchant and a manufacturer in the city of Groningen, and was the ancestor of the Groningen branch of this family. His grandson was Allard Hulshoff. Arent Berends Hulshoff was also a son of Berend Jansz. He was apparently a weaver or merchant of woven materials in Twenthe; he accompanied his brother Hendrik Berends in 1719 on his voyage to Prussia and Poland; his son Berend (Barent) Arents Hulshoff (ca. 1697-1779) married Geertje Pol Jansdochter and was a preacher of the congregation of Borne 1736-1779, as was the son of Berend Arents, Arent Hulshoff (born 1728 at Borne, died 1802 at Hengelo), who founded a textile factory at Hengelo and served as preacher 1770-1802. The son of Hendrik Berends was Gerrit Hendriks Hulshoff; he moved to Wildervank and was a preacher of the congregation of Wildervank-Veendam from 1752 until his death in 1781. His sister Fenneken Hulshoff was married to Jan Jansz Pol, preacher at Borne about 1710-1717. All these ministers, except Allard Hulshoff, were untrained. The following Mennonite ministers, trained at the Amsterdam Mennonite Seminary and the University of Amsterdam, were descendants of Hendrik Berends: Allard Abraham Hulshoff, born 18— at Amsterdam, died 22 February 1875, served Akkrum 1839-1845, and Leeuwarden 1845-1870; Gerhard Adam Hulshoff, born 1836 at Borne, died there 1901, served Knollendam 1864-1890, and Enkhuizen-Medemblik 1890-1894; his son Gerhard Adam Hulshoff, born 1874 at Knollendam, died 1938 at Borne, served at Hindeloopen 1904-1910, Terhorne 1910-1913, Holwerd 1913-1916, and Gorredijk-Lippenhuizen 1916-1927; Isaac Hulshoff, born 1869 at Borne, died at Zeist 1951, pastor of Baard 1895-1901, Noordbroek 1901-1903, Irnsum 1903-1914, and Workum 1914-1935; Jacob Hulshoff, born 1875 at Sneek, died 1938 at Amersfoort, pastor at Rottevalle 1902-1909, Makkum 1909-1920, Oldeboorn 1920-1930 and Ternaard 1930-1937.
