Hulle, van, family

Van Hulle was a Dutch Mennonite family, formerly found in Haarlem. This was a refugee family. Jan Hulle, a Mennonite martyr of Ieper and executed there in 1561, may have belonged to this family, as obviously did Jehanne van Hulle and Cataline van Hulle, Mennonites who had left Ghent in 1568, their property being confiscated. Jehanne seems soon to have returned, for Janneken van Hulle, who died as a martyr at Ghent in 1570, is identical with Jehanne. Cathalyne van Hulle (baptized about 1581 at Ghent by Paulus van Meenen, who soon after performed her marriage with Jacob Martins), apparently not the same person as Cataline mentioned before, was a Mennonite banished from Ghent in 1592.

Denys van Hulle, son of Michiel van Hulle, living at Haarlem about 1610, was apparently a preacher there. It could not be ascertained in which congregation he served. He was a man of moderation, opposing the strict principles of Leenaert Clock and others.
