Howard-Miami County Amish Settlement (Kokomo, Indiana, USA)
Howard-Miami County Amish settlement, north of Kokomo, Indiana, was founded in 1848, largely by settlers from the Holmes County (Ohio) region. The division between the "Old Order" and "progressive" factions, which spread throughout the country, took place in the new settlement sometime between 1856 and 1863. The Old Order community almost died out but began to revive in 1887-1890. It has never been large, and in 1955 had only two small congregations with a total of eighty-eight members. The two Mennonite (Mennonite Church) congregations of the area had 422 members, while the Beachy Amish congregation, organized in 1939, had 49 members. A small Conservative Amish congregation organized a few years before the Beachy Amish division failed to thrive.
