Hofstetter (Hoffstetter) family
Hofstetter (Hoffstetter) is a Mennonite family name originating in Langnau, canton of Bern, Switzerland. It means "caretaker of orchard or farm." The family found its way from the Emmental to the Bernese Jura in the early part of the 18th century with many of their coreligionists. Members of the family lived near Bevillard and Delsberg in 1824. The first mention of a member of the family as an Anabaptist was in 1672, when a person with this name was imprisoned for returning to Switzerland after having been deported for belonging to this forbidden religion. The brothers Nicolas, Peter, and Christian Hofstetter came with their families from the Bernese Jura to the Sonnenberg settlement in Wayne County, Ohio, in 1824, and became one of the leading families of the community. In 1954, Reuben Hofstetter was the bishop of the Kidron Mennonite Church near Kidron, Ohio. The names Hofstetter and Hostettler did not originally come from the same name.
