Hendrik Eemkens (Henrick Emken), an Anabaptist martyr, a native of Loquard in East Friesland, Germany, a tailor, was a simple man unable to read or write; but he defended his faith with amazing skill, clearness, and conviction against a monk sent to convert him. Eemkens was baptized by Joost Verbeeck in 1561. He was executed on 10 June 1562 at Utrecht. His death is described by van Braght, with an etching by Luiken. His wife Anna was baptized with him and was likewise captured and tortured; but nothing is known concerning her death.
