Johannes Hübner (1668-1731), a noted Lutheran educator, teacher at the University of Leipzig for a time, 1694-1711, rector of the Merseburg (Germany) Gymnasium, 1711-31 rector of the Hamburg Johanneum, important in church history only as the author of Biblische Historien (1714), which enjoyed over 100 editions in Europe (Germany) and was translated into five foreign languages. The book also was reprinted at least 81 times in America (first edition at Harrisburg, Pa., in 1826), and at least four times (1887, 1889, 1891, 1909) by John F. Funk at Elkhart, IN, and once at Scottdale, PA in 1936, which indicates its popularity among the Mennonites in America. It was the first German book to publish Biblical material for children in story form instead of catechetical or text form. The title of the first Funk edition was Biblische Geschichten des Alten und Neuen Testaments durch Bibelsprüche und zahlreiche Erklärungen erläutert. (222 pp.). The original German title was Zweimal 52 Biblische Historien und Fragen (Leipzig). In the 1950s it was still sold by booksellers for the Amish, e.g., by J. A. Raber of Baltic, Ohio.
