Simon Gorter, b. 1838 at Warns, became the minister at Aalsmeer in 1861 and at Wormerveer in 1863. Because of a long ailment from which he had been suffering for some time, he retired with his family to Arcachon (France) in 1864-1866. His excellent articles in the periodical De Gids gave him great fame as an author. In 1869 he was compelled by his health to resign from his office, after which he became the editor of the newly founded Amsterdam daily newspaper Het Nieuws van den Dag. Here he published a series of excellent editorials which were published after his death in a book, Een Jaar levens voor de Dagbladpers (1872). De Hoop Scheffer published his articles in the Gids in a booklet Letterkundige Studien, as well as several sermons under the title, Ik geloof, daarom spreek ik. He died 5 June 1871. His wife Johanna Lugt died in 1924.
