Goerz is a Mennonite family of Dutch descent. Members of the Goerz family moved from the Netherlands to West Prussia in the 16th and 17th centuries. Many of them served as preachers in Prussian congregations. Preachers in Montau-Gruppe, for instance, included Dirk Gerts, until his death in 1706; Franz Gertz 1725-d. 1757, and an elder beginning in 1756; Hans Gertz 1756-d. 1767; Cornelis Gertz (1736-1796), preacher 1773-1796; Abraham Gertz 1776-1806; Claas Görtz 1782-1786; Peter Görtz 1801-d. 1813; Franz Gertz 1806-d. 1814; Dirk Görtz 1819-d. 1842; Hans Goertz (1792-1829), preacher after 1814, elder beginning in 1821; Jacob Goertz (1827-98), preacher after 1856, elder in Gruppe beginning in 1880; Jacob Goertz (1849-1924), preacher in Gruppe from 1879, elder beginning in 1900; Johann Goertz (1852-1930), preacher 1897-1930; Gerhard Goertz (1877-1951), preacher 1924-1951; Albert Goertz (1893-1958), preacher 1932-1958.

In the congregation of the Culmsche Niederung, Andries (Andreas) Gertz was a preacher around 1750-1765 and Jacob Gertz from 1775 until after 1810. Some members of the family were also found in Lithuania, East Prussia; when a number of them were expelled in 1732. Abraham Geerts (Gertz) was among those who migrated to the Netherlands. He soon after returned to Prussia and may have been the same person as Abraham Gertzen, who was a preacher of the Lithuanian congregation from 1762 until around 1765. P.S. Goertz was for many years dean of Bethel College in Newton, Kansas.
