Elizabeth D. Goertz was born and raised in Marion County, Kansas. She graduated from the Bethel Deaconess School of Nursing, Newton, KS in 1918 and went to China as a missionary in 1921 under the General Conference Mennonite Church Mission Board. There she helped Abe M. Lohrentz in the dispensary at Kai Chow (later known as Puyang). She founded the successful Yu Jen School of Nursing there in 1930. When the Japanese occupied Kai Chow on 11 February 1939, Goertz was interned in the notorious Shantung Compound.
After the mission work closed in China (1948) she worked as a nurse in mission work in India, China, and the United States. She retired in 1976 to Hillsboro, Kansas where she remained until her death on 31 March 1986.
